Homeopathic Remedies for Neuropathy in Hypothyroidism

Tingling, numbness, or burning sensations in the hands and feet—known as Peripheral Neuropathy—can sometimes show up alongside Hypothyroidism. It’s a frustrating combination, and one that can be addressed when a patient begins homeopathic treatment for a thyroid disorder. Because homeopathy is a holistic form of medicine all areas get addressed as treatment progresses. Here I’ve tried to outline why neuropathy can be associated with thyroid conditions and some appropriate homeopathic remedies for neuropathy in hypothyroidism.

People with Hypothyroidism are more prone to Peripheral Neuropathy because low thyroid hormone levels affect nerves in several overlapping ways:

  1. Slowed nerve function

Thyroid hormones help regulate how fast nerves send signals. When levels are low:

  • Nerve conduction slows down
  • Signals become weaker or delayed
This leads to symptoms like tingling, numbness, or “pins and needles.”
  1. Tissue swelling & compression

Hypothyroidism can cause fluid retention and tissue swelling (called myxedema).

  • This swelling can compress nerves, especially in tight spaces
  • A classic example is carpal tunnel syndrome (median nerve compression in the wrist)
  1. Impaired nerve repair

Thyroid hormones are important for:

  • Nerve maintenance
  • Repair of damaged nerve fibers

Low levels can reduce the body’s ability to heal or regenerate nerves, making damage more likely or longer lasting.

  1. Associated deficiencies

Hypothyroidism is often linked with deficiencies that also affect nerves, such as:

These can worsen or independently cause neuropathy.

  1. Autoimmune link

If hypothyroidism is due to Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis:

  • The immune system may also target other tissues
  • This can contribute indirectly to nerve inflammation or damage
  1. Metabolic effects

Slowed metabolism can:

  • Reduce blood flow to nerves
  • Affect how nerves use energy
Over time, this can make nerves more vulnerable to dysfunction.

Homeopathic Remedies for Neuropathy in Hypothyroidism

When treating patients with a hypothyroidism most benefit from a prescription of what we call  a main constitutional remedy plus thyroid specific combination remedies.  However some still need more symptom specific acute remedies to address the neuropathy symptoms, some of which I have  I have listed here to give you an idea of their differences and actions.

Hypericum perforatum

A well-known remedy for nerve-related pain.
Often used when sensations feel sharp, shooting, or electric, especially along a nerve pathway.

 Arsenicum album

Commonly chosen for burning pains, particularly when they feel worse at night.
Restlessness and a need for warmth often go along with this picture.

 Phosphorus

Considered where there is tingling, numbness, and sensitivity.
Often suits those who feel mentally and physically drained.

 Calcarea phosphorica

Used in cases where there’s general weakness or slow recovery.
May be helpful when the body feels depleted or low in energy.

 Lycopodium

Sometimes selected when symptoms are more pronounced on one side (often the right), or when nerve issues are accompanied by digestive imbalance.

With homeopathy It’s very important to look at the individual symptoms; so for example when, where and how you experience the symptoms. But I regularly see in my practice homeopathy bringing about a long-lasting cure, where patients no longer have to suffer what can be very uncomfortable and inconvenient symptoms of neuropathy and overall comfort and wellbeing is restored.
