Homeopathy for the HPV virus

Yesterday I saw a patient who I had been treating for the HPV virus. Her latest test results showed that she no longer showed any signs of the virus. This was remarkable because this was the first time that she had had a negative result in over twenty years. She was over the moon and is another great example of the power of homeopathy.

What is the HPV virus

The HPV virus is a viral infection that commonly causes skin or mucous membrane growths (warts). There are more than 100 varieties of human papillomavirus (HPV).

Some types of human papillomavirus (HPV virus low risk) infection cause warts, and some (HPV virus high risk) can cause different types of cancer. An indication that you have the HPV virus are genital warts, which are similar to common warts but are usually found around or in the vagina, cervix (the lower part of the uterus), penis, scrotum, rectum, or the area between the vagina and rectum. They are soft, fleshy, small growths on the skin. It is the most common STD but most people do not know they have the virus until they are tested.

The HPV virus can cause six types of cancer: These include: anal, cervical, oropharyngeal, penile, vaginal and vulva. These cancers are more likely to develop if you have had the HPV virus for several years. Infection with the HPV virus does not cause symptoms. However, depending on the site of infection, the pre-cancers and cancers caused by a high-risk HPV infection that persists for many years (10-20) may cause symptoms such as lumps, bleeding, and pain.

Treatment for genital warts includes:

  • Cryotherapy: This involves using liquid nitrogen to freeze off warts.
  • Electrocautery: This involves using an electrical current to burn away the warts.
  • Laser or light therapy: This involves using a high-powered, targeted beam to remove the unwanted tissue.
  • Surgical removal: A surgeon can cut away warts in an outpatient procedure that involves a local aesthetic

Homeopathic treatment for the HPV virus

As homeopathy is an individualised form medicine, an indication of what remedy might be the best indicated remedy for a patient is the location of the warts. Are they located in the Vagina, the cervix or, for males, the penis or scrotum? Plus, are there any other characteristics, such burning or itching? After gathering this information, I would match these characteristics to certain remedies. Other important information would be is the patient eating a lot of or craving certain foods, how is their sleep and how they are feeling mentally and emotionally. I’ve listed examples of some of the most indicated remedies below.

Homeopathic Remedies

Thuja is one of the most common remedies for treating warts and one that I tend to use a lot. It might be indicated if the patient is prone to sadness and depression or often feels isolated or alone. They may feel ugly or unclean or even different from everyone. Warts may be present on the cervix, vagina, or labia. They may crave cold food or chocolate and be averse to onions and garlic.

Natrum sulph might be indicated if the patient has suffered mental troubles due to a head injury. They may be emotionally sensitive, closed, or sad. They have a strong craving for fatty food or a desire or aversion to yogurt. Warts are present on genitalia, vagina, or cervix

Nitric acid. A person needing this remedy might be experiencing a weak memory. The patient can be discontented and pessimistic with a tendency to hold grudges. The warts can be large and cauliflower like and be found on the genitalia, cervix and uterus. They might have developed an aversion to meat but be craving cheese, fish or carbonated drinks. They may be sleepy in the day but awake after 2am.

Medorrhinum. I tend to prescribe this remedy if I can see a lot of excess or over production. If I can identify this as a pattern then the patient may need Medorrhinum. They may not just be presenting with warts but with polyps, cysts and other growths. They may have heavy periods or chronic catarrhal conditions. Everything is increased and over produced. Mentally, they like to stay up late. They can do things to excess, such as drinking, drug taking or even exercise. They are often anxious and hurried.

Herbs

Echinacea angustifolia when combined with the homeopathic remedy Thuja has been shown to be effective in treating cytotoxicity.https://www.thieme-connect.com/products/ejournals/abstract/10.1055/s-0037-1608960?device=desktop&innerWidth=412&offsetWidth=412&lang=en

So as you can see, there are alternatives to medical wart removal procedures. The homeopathic remedies, over time, reduce and remove the warts and prevent them from returning. Increasing the bodies natural immunity to help prevent certain cancers.

Homeopathy for Irritable bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Homeopathy for Irritable Bowel Syndrome

What is Irritable bowel syndrome?

Irritable bowel is the umbrella term given to any condition affecting the intestines and bowel. Unfortunately G.P’s don’t know the cause of IBS or how to treat it. If you are diagnosed with IBS it is usually because no serious conditions such as Diverticulitis or Crohn’s have shown up as positive in tests. However, symptoms can be just as debilitating and unpleasant and include:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Abnormal bowel habits
  • Wind,
  • Bloating
  • Distension (a widening of the girth of the abdomen) mucus in stools.
  • One third of IBS patients suffer from bouts of constipation. One third of IBS patients suffer from bouts of diarrhoea, others don’t fall into a single pattern.
  • Other symptoms include feeling tired, feeling sick, backache and bladder symptoms

It’s a very common condition, affecting up to 20% of the U.K population with more females suffering than males. Most prominently in the 20-40 age group.

Medications prescribed include:

  • Imodium (Loperamide) for diarrhoea
  • Laxatives for constipation.
  • Antibiotics for bacterial infection
  • Antacids for heartburn

Homeopathy for Irritable bowel syndrome, when treated individually, can be very effective. The results of which can be found in this RCT trial. RCT being the gold standard for treatment testing. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S1550830722001690

Homeopathy facilitates a permanent cure by addressing the individual symptoms and possible cause.

Causes

Bacterial infections such as food poisoning.

Bacterial infections caused by food poisoning often leads to Leaky gut where undigested foods and bacteria leak into the gut.

Stress and anxiety

Homeopathy is one of the few natural forms of medicine which can address mental and emotional symptoms safely and without any side effects.

There are many homeopathic remedies that are suitable for treating IBS, but the key to homeopathy for irritable bowel syndrome is to treat the individualised symptoms of that patient. That is one of the key differences in homeopathy to allopathic treatment.

Food sensitivities

Most patients have food sensitivities which can make their IBS symptoms worse.

These include:

  • Gluten
  • dairy
  • sugar

Cutting them out may help but patients may still be left with symptoms.

Case study

I have included a case study of a recent patient suffering from IBS whose symptoms responded extremely well to homeopathic treatment.

Becky came to see me because she had been suffering with IBS since childhood (she was now in her mid-forties). Symptoms had got worse after a severe case of food poisoning in her late twenties and having her gallbladder removed, in her mid-thirties due to gallstones. She had a long history of anti-biotics and had more recently been diagnosed with H-pylori.

Her symptoms included:

Loose stools (often with undigested food visible).

Gas and wind.

Anxiety especially (around her health)

Intolerance to eggs, dairy, gluten and coffee.

Brain fog and a sense of overwhelm.

Fatigue/exhaustion

Becky worked for herself and as such had a heavy workload, which could be demanding and stressful. She described herself as a perfectionist. There was a history of cancer in her immediate family and there was also some unresolved grief that I felt was also having an impact on her health.

Because of her condition she had to eat very slowly or else her symptoms would aggravate.

Due to raised histamine levels before her period she would experience symptoms such as tightness in chest, insomnia, and irregular periods.

First prescription

In this case I prescribed a remedy which I hoped would match her physically, mentally and emotionally, plus remedies to support her liver and kidneys, which were under strain due to the characteristics of her symptoms. Her main constitutional remedy was Natrum Phos. I also prescribed Berberis and Chelidonium to support the liver and kidneys.

Remedies prescribed

Nat Phos is a remedy for addressing excess acidity, diarrhoea, flatulence or a disordered stomach. Mentally and emotionally, it covers fear and anxiety. Symptoms are worse before menstruation.

Berberis

A great remedy to support the liver and Kidneys. Indicated for gallstone colic, bladder disorders and inflammation of the kidneys.

Chelidonium

Used for disorders of the liver but also acts on the spleen, kidneys and right side of the abdomen. Also indicated if you are cross and irritable or have a despondent temperament.

Follow up

When she returned for her follow up appointment four weeks later, she had a lot to report.

Immediately after beginning the Natrum phos her symptoms had got worse. I took this as a good sign, as it indicated to me that the bodies vital force has been stimulated and a healing response was taking place.

The worsening of symptoms lasted for three days. She also found that she was much more emotional over this period and was particularly weepy and irritable. Gradually all symptoms abated and by the time she saw me she was in a much better place. I decided to repeat the prescription as things were progressing well.

Outcome

Seven weeks after starting her first course of remedies Becky contacted me to say that all her IBS and H-pylori symptoms had gone. Her bowel movements were normal, she was no longer anxious, her hormones felt rebalanced and her last period had been relatively symptom free. I have to admit that I was surprised at how effective this remedy was in clearing all Becky’s symptoms. I initially thought that I would have to prescribe remedies to clear the history of antibiotics or address hormonal issues as treatment progressed. This was not the case. The Natrum phos worked beautifully in addressing all her symptoms.

She was so pleased to be feeling “the best that she had felt in years”. So much so that she had decided to continue her healing journey by looking into studying natural health.

Other remedies for Irritable bowel syndrome

Because homeopathy is an individualised form of medicine, the remedies that worked for Becky may not work for someone else. So I have included some other IBS appropriate remedies.

Lycopodium

Feeling fullness in stomach after eating little. Bloating and belching and great weakness of digestion. Poor self esteem and self confidence.

Colocynthis

Ailments triggered by anger. Colic or cramping pains causing the patient to bent double. Diarrhoea with green, yellowy stools soon after eating or drinking.

Nux Vomica

Acid indigestion with nausea. Angry and impatient. Constipation with ineffectual urging. Toxic liver from drugs, alcohol and chemicals.

Arsenicum album

Involuntary offensive stools. Copious diarrhoea . Much anxiety, especially felt in the stomach. Burning and pressure felt in rectum.

Homeopathy for the adverse effects of a recent seasonal vaxx

Here is a case study of a very recent patient who came to me seeking treatment for the adverse affects of a recent vaxx to show how quickly her symptoms were turned around after just one remedy; Aconite,Hopefully it will demonstrate the power of Homeopathy for the adverse effects of a recent seasonal vaxx can be.

Cathy had had the fourth in a series of seasonal vaccinations nine months prior to coming to see. She had in fact developed some of her symptoms after contracting Covid 19 in 2021 when she developed quite severe symptoms that had lasted for 5 weeks. These included joint pain and weakness which had gradually dissipated. She also had the recommended series of seasonal vaxx’s available at this time, but it was after the fourth one that the following symptoms appeared:

Severe joint pain and weakness.

Fever with chills.

Sweating

Loss of taste (for 1 week)

Severe palpitations (heart felt like it was jumping out of her body)

Itchiness all over body, going into hives when scratching a lot.

Anxiety and panic attacks with weeping.

Menstrual period slightly erratic and problematic. Craving for sweets and chocolate before period.

Knees feeling like jelly.

Constant fatigue and exhaustion. Especially worse at midday.

Body feeling very heavy.

Low mood: furious about the smallest thing. Quick to anger, considerably worse before period. Scared of people and crowds.

She also said that she avoided leaving her house now except when absolutely necessary. She was finding social interactions draining and stressful.

She said that although she has always been a bit of a homebody, she used to enjoyed social interactions and conversations. Now that had all gone, and she felt like she just wanted to shut the door on the world. After the fourth vaxx she was signed off work for one month, as her anxiety, on returning, had been so bad. She also had flu 3 weeks prior to our meeting, where she had experienced crippling joint pain.

On the basis of the above symptoms, I decided to prescribe the homeopathic remedy Aconite. This remedy has a big affinity with anxiety, fear and panic attacks. It was a remedy that came up often, during the time when I was treating Syrian refugee children who had been exposed to the horrors of war and bombings. It comes from the Monkhood plant that grows on high mountains where there is a lot of wind, storms and activity. It is a major remedy for inflammation and fevers with symptoms that have set in with great rapidity and has a marked effect on the serous membranes and muscular tissue. It is a great remedy to take at the very first sign of a cold or flu or you have had a sudden fright or shock.

When Cathy returned 4 weeks later, I was anxious to see the effect the remedy had. I had seen other patients with a reaction to this vaxx but this was the most severe case that I had come across. The first thing I noticed is that she looked different. It’s a little hard to describe but generally she looked happier, calmer and well rested. This often happens in patients when they have responded well to remedy.

When questioned Cathy said that she had begun to feel better on day two of taking the remedy. Her jelly knees went immediately as well as her joint pain and weakness. She no longer feels drained or exhausted with much more energy in the morning. Her craving for sweet things has gone. In fact, she has even switched to craving salads and greens. She has noticed that she is eating less meat but desiring more fruit smoothies. The feverish feeling has gone. The palpitations have significantly reduced. She is sleeping better. Her anxiety is much less and she is even enjoying going out again. Her reflux has gone (she didn’t even mention that in her previous consultation). Her menstrual period came on time with no cramps or heaviness. Emotionally she was much better in the run up to her period. So much so that she didn’t even realise that it was coming on. She is sweating less.

She says her itchiness returns on the days she is not taking the remedy (but not going into hives) and she has noticed that she has become a little breathless on walking to work now. I have decided to increase the days that she is taking the remedy to see if the itchiness continues to clear. I can also see another remedy working its way into the picture which will also need introducing to address the new symptom of slight breathlessness on walking. I’m not concerned about this new symptom. That’s the nature of homeopathy. It clears the layers much like peeling an onion. To reveal what the body would like clearing next to achieve equilibrium and optimum health.

Overall, I’m so pleased on how quickly Cathy’s symptoms have turned around after only 4 weeks of taking the remedies and that she began to feel better on the second day! Hopefully this case study shows how Homeopathy for the adverse effects of a recent seasonal vaxx can be so powerful. Never underestimate the power of homeopathy. If this story resonates with you and you feel that you have had issues since a certain medical interaction, please feel free to book in for a free 15 minute chat to explore how homeopathy may be able to help you.

Why gluten (and dairy) is bad for your Thyroid

Hypothyroidism or Hashimoto’s?

Research has shown that gluten (and dairy) is bad for your thyroid and in this blog I try to explain why. If you have thyroid dysfunction, there’s a good chance that it’s an autoimmune condition. Around 90% of people with Hypothyroidism (caused by too little thyroid hormone) actually have Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. But because most doctors don’t test for this (due to treatment being the same as for hypothyroidism) patients are usually unaware that they have it. They take the prescribed medication believing that there is nothing further that can be done to help ease their symptoms

What is Hashimoto’s?

Hashimoto’s is when your immune system is mistakenly attacking your own thyroid, causing it to affect your levels of thyroid hormones. Hypothyroidism also often goes undiagnosed because the immune fluctuations caused by Hashimoto’s makes TSH, the lab marker for hypothyroidism, wax, and wane. So that on the day that you go for your test your thyroid levels may actually be in range for a short time but you will be sent away with a negative diagnosis but your symptoms will resurface.

What is Gluten?

One of the first pieces of advice I give my thyroid patients is to cut out gluten and dairy. Gluten is the name for proteins found in wheat, rye, barley, and triticale (a cross between wheat and rye). Gluten acts as the glue that helps food to maintain their shape. That is why some gluten free products can taste a bit like cardboard.

Why is gluten (and dairy) bad for your thyroid?

The problem with consuming gluten when you have Hashimoto’s is that it contains a protein (gliadin) that resembles an enzyme of your thyroid (transglutaminase).

Your thyroid is at risk of autoimmune attacks because gluten looks so much like thyroid cells. So, if you have gluten sensitivity or celiac disease, this can cause your immune system to mistakenly attack your thyroid. Over time, these attacks can lead to an underactive thyroid, resulting in many symptoms associated with hypothyroidism. Even among non-celiac patients, gluten has been linked to promoting inflammation, producing interactions from the immune system, and being toxic to living cells.

Many people can consume gluten with no acute symptoms. But for others, including those with Celiac disease, non-Celiac gluten sensitivity, wheat allergy, or a predisposition to autoimmune disease, gluten can trigger an aggressive immune response.

What causes a gluten sensitivity?

This is largely caused by a leaky gut. In a healthy digestive tract, there are small spaces between the cells that line the intestine. These tight junctions allow the absorption of small, digested particles into the bloodstream. Factors such as alcohol and food sensitivities, certain medications, intestinal dysbiosis, and very importantly, stress, can irritate the gut lining, leading to larger spaces in the intestinal wall and absorption of larger, undigested food particles. Which in turn causes leaky gut.

Once leaky gut is present, gluten (and other larger molecules) enters the bloodstream, is recognised as foreign by the immune system, and triggers an immune response. Immune cells form antibodies against the protein gliadin (which is in gluten) to quickly detect and neutralise it in future exposures. Due to very similar structures in gliadin and an enzyme called transglutaminase, which is heavily concentrated in the thyroid gland, these sensitised gluten antibodies will mistakenly attack the thyroid gland at the same time it attacks gluten protein. When the immune system mounts an autoimmune response due to similarities between foreign and self-proteins is called molecular mimicry.

The dairy connection

On top of this, 50% of people with gluten sensitivity also experience molecular mimicry with casein, a protein found in dairy. This is known as cross-reactivity, where your body reacts to a trigger that resembles the first trigger. Therefore, dairy is the second biggest trigger for people with Hashimoto’s.

Summary

So, to recap and ascertain why gluten (and dairy) are bad for your thyroid. Most people diagnosed with Hypothyroidism actually have the autoimmune condition Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. Their body is attacking their thyroid glad which is exacerbated if they eat gluten and secondarily dairy. This is because certain factors, such as stress, may have caused leaky gut, which allows larger molecules, such as gluten, to enter the blood stream. When this happens, the gluten molecules are wrongly identified by the immune system, causing it to attack the thyroid gland where the gluten molecules are mainly residing.

Homeopathy for Hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s

When treating a patient’s thyroid condition, it does not matter if you have a diagnosis of Hypothyroidism or Hashimoto’s. Homeopathic remedies do not recognise the diagnosis, only the symptoms. In my experience the main healing is done by the homeopathic remedies. However, if there are actions that you can take to support your thyroid, such as thyroid specific supplements and eliminating harmful foodstuffs, all the better. Hopefully this blog will help you understand why gluten and dairy are bad for your thyroid and are to be avoided for optimum healing of your thyroid.

Homeopathy for mould toxicity

Mould toxicity

Homeopathy for mould toxicity. Homeopathy can be very effective in treating a person with mould allergies or mould sickness caused by black mould spores. According to U.K housing charity Shelter, there are 1 in 5 renters who are affected by damp and mould in Britain. In the U.S statistics say that about 70% of homes have mould, with 50% of building moulds being invisible.

Genetic factor

Around 28% of people are genetically susceptible to mould toxicity, which causes an auto-immune like response in the body. This is because mast cells, the white blood cells that trigger an inflammatory response, are very sensitive to mould toxins. Mast cells commonly release histamine, serotonin, or tryptase in response to toxic mould. People susceptible to this response have the HLA (human leukocyte antigen) gene and it prevents their body eliminating mould toxicity. This can lead to many severe symptoms which can go undiagnosed, especially if they are living in a home where the mould is hidden.

Mould toxicity/sickness vs mould allergy symptoms

The medical establishment appears to believe that severe mould toxicity or mould sickness is a myth and that black mould only triggers congestion and allergies. what I’ve seen in my homeopathic clinic and through further research strongly contests this. If your symptoms are more severe and continue after you have left the mouldy environment i.e moved house, then you probably have mould sickness which is due to CIRS (chronic inflammatory response syndrome).

Symptoms of mould allergies:

  • Sneezing
  • Itching
  • Runny nose
  • Congestion
  • Dry or scaling skin
  • Headaches

Allopathic treatment of mould allergies

  • Nasal corticosteroids
  • Oral decongestants.
  • Decongestant nasal sprays.

Symptoms of mould toxicity / sickness

  • Fatigue
  • Weakness
  • Aches
  • Muscle Cramps
  • Unusual pain
  • Headaches
  • Light Sensitivity
  • Red Eyes
  • Blurred Vision
  • Tearing
  • Sinus Problems
  • Cough
  • Shortness of Breath
  • Abdominal Pain
  • Diarrhoea
  • Joint Pain
  • Morning Stiffness
  • Tingling
  • Memory issues
  • Metallic taste
  • Tremors
  • Lack of focus/ concentration
  • Confusion/disorientation
  • Mood swings
  • Temperature regulation problems
  • Excessive thirst
  • Static shocks
  • Sexual intercourse discomfort

Natural treatments for mould toxicity/sickness

In my experience the most effective treatment for mould toxicity is homeopathic treatment, as I’ll highlight in the case study below. I have also included supplements and foods that can help in the assistance of breakdown and detoxification of the mould once treatment has started

Cause of mould toxicity

Black mould contains mycotoxins. Mycotoxins are poisonous substances produced by fungi or mould. They can be toxic for humans when they are eaten, absorbed into the skin, or inhaled. A small amount of mycotoxin can be damaging to human or animal health and even cause death. Mould is harboured in the body and continues to release and produce mycotoxins, which contribute to ongoing chronic illness (CIRS). Sinuses are the favoured spot in the body for the mould and mycotoxins to live.

Mould toxicity and the thyroid dysfunction

Mycotoxins that are released from moulds can be particularly damaging to the Thyroid gland. Mould affects the thyroid by encouraging an inflammatory response such as thyroiditis. Thyroid conditions can be reversed by detoxing the mould toxins as shown in the case below.

Homeopathy for mould toxicity

A recent patient of mine made a miraculous recovery after being severely affected by mould toxicity.

Case study

Maggie was exposed to invisible mould in her local Gym in Texas (50% of all moulds are hidden) and some in her home 3 years ago in 2019. Since then, she found it hard to gain weight, had Candida overgrowth and it even triggered hypothyroidism. She had pain in her hands and feet and her joints were stiff in cold weather. In the week leading up to her period she had cold sores around her mouth. If her weight dropped to under 117Ibs (8 stone 5ibs) which it was prone to do, she became so weak she could hardly walk. Her hair was thinning, especially on the crown area and her nails would break and peel easily. The week before her period would be particularly bad especially around her emotions when she became, angry, snappy, paranoid, and insecure from overthinking. She had cramping and burning pubic area and a very heavy flow.

The mould had caused a chronic inflammatory response syndrome which resulted in her throat burning and swelling with a stabbing pain If she tried to sing (she was a singer) and cramping in the muscles in her legs. At one point her vision even went but was now left with shaky eyes and is prone to dizziness.

She had tried detoxing with Bentonite clay and parasite cleanses, but nothing had worked. She complained that her body temperature was always cold even though she lived in a warm climate.

Remedies

One strange symptom was that she regularly dreamed that her teeth were falling out. This symptom when paired with all her physical symptoms bought me to the remedy Thuja. This is one of the main remedies for clearing vaccine damage, so I knew it had a detoxing action.

I also gave her remedies to support her organs of detoxification such as the liver and kidneys plus thyroid support remedy combinations to help balance and support the thyroid.

Progress

From that first appointment she began to make progress. Gaining weight and energy and having a more balanced period both physically and emotionally. She showed signs of detoxification such as mild acne, and an increase in cold sores around her mouth which soon cleared. Over several months she continued to improve as the remedies were tweaked to address her change in symptoms. Homeopathy is like peeling an Onion. As symptoms are treated other new ones may become more prominent as they need addressing. Gradually she was able to begin singing and exercising again, her thyroid levels became in range and after exactly 6 months of treatment she became pregnant! She has now stopped all remedies and continues to enjoy a symptom free pregnancy and generally feels very well. Pregnancy can put such a strain on a women’s body so the fact that she feels so well is a major indication of how far she has come.

The power of homeopathy.

Since researching mould toxicity and how it affects only people with the HLA gene has made me realise how incredible homeopathy is. As far as I am aware Maggie only tried a few therapies such as bentonite clay before she came to me for treatment. The tipping point being when her thyroid became affected adding to her long list of symptoms. Her system appears to be now free of all the toxins that her body was not previously able to expel due to her genetic makeup.

Lifestyle changes to prevent mould exposure

You may not suffer from mould toxicity but there are certain foods that you might want to limit to lesson your exposure to this harmful substance.

  • Coffee
  • Aged cheeses
  • Alcohol
  • Wine vinegar
  • Condiments
  • Processed meats
  • Mushrooms
  • Packaged fruit juices
  • Dried fruit
  • Leftovers (eat within 24 hours or freeze)
  • Overripe fruit and vegetables (avoid produce that is wilted, discoloured, or mushy)
  • Bread
  • Tomato products
  • Multi-B vitamins
  • Products of Aspergillusfermentation (soy sauce, chocolate, black tea, malt extract, Lactaid, citric

Investing in a high-quality air filter if you suspect your home may be susceptible to mould.

Homeopathy for Anxiety and Depression

As a Homeopath, I have seen how this natural form of energy medicine can be so effective in treating anxiety and depression. It is estimated that 1 in 4 people in the U.K and nearly 1 in 2 in the U.S will suffer at some point from a mental health issue. Most people are prescribed anti-depressants such as Citalopram or Sertraline. These can come with certain side effects such as dry mouth, excessive sweating, headaches, nausea and feeling tired or weak. In some cases, patients, especially young people, can actually feel more suicidal when they first begin taking Sertaline. Also these pharmaceutical medications never get to the underlying cause of the condition. They only act in putting a plaster over the emotional wound or condition. What a lot of people do not realise is that Homeopathy is one of the few therapies that can affect a long lasting mental and emotional cure. Without any inconvenient or harmful side effects. So homeopathy for anxiety and depression should be considered if you are trying to avoid going on anti-depressant medication.

Triggers for anxiety and depression

There are many reasons for why a person experiences anxiety and depression. Some are due to childhood trauma or past traumatic events. Some appear to be caused by an inherited tendency and some can even be a result of a hormone imbalance such as prompted by the menopause. Whatever the reason a homeopath will usually be able to identify the trigger or contributing factors and work with that to identify the necessary remedies that a patient needs. Which in turn help lifts or calms the mood and restores a sense of balance and equilibrium, no matter how severe the symptoms.

Case studies

Here are some examples of how homeopathy for anxiety and depression has been able to help some of my patients:

Patient A was a woman whose anxiety was affecting every aspect of her life. She had very low self-esteem which resulted in persistent rows with her partner and felt extreme anxiety on a daily basis. She would get very stressed about work and when things got too much she would just withdraw into her bedroom, often binge eating and drinking, which would make her feel worse. All symptoms escalated just before her period. Her issues stemmed from childhood trauma and neglect. There was a history of mental health issues in the family. After several months of treatment, the patient was no longer anxious, and had a much better sense of self-worth. She was coping well with work and had stopped the tendency to self-isolate, binge eat or drink or show any obsessive behaviour. By the end of her treatment, nine months later, was feeling “really good and happy”.

Patient B had severe anxiety with palpitations and suffered from O.C.D. Sometimes the anxiety went into depression when things became too much, resulting in her spending days in bed. Sometimes she would experience panic attacks. She said she had always suffered with anxiety, but her symptoms increased significantly after a recent traumatic event. There was also a history of alcohol and. mental health issues in the family. After the first appointment she reported that her mood had started to improve immediately, and she also felt more energised. After her fourth appointment she was only experiencing the occasional bad day and had significantly reduced her anti-depressant medication.

Patient C had felt depressed for over a year after a sudden, shocking death by a close family member. She saw no future, was crying all the time and was comfort eating. It was as if she was stuck in a grief state and totally unable to move out of it. After several months of working through the remedies she is now in a much better place and does not need to go on medication, which her doctor had recommended when she first came to see me.

Homeopathy can also work very quickly in alleviating feelings of depression. This month a new patient contacted me to tell me that after taking her first prescription her depression had started to lift and she had much more energy. This week another new patient contacted me to ask whether it was possible that the remedies she had received a day or two ago could have such an immediate effect. She started to instantly feel better after taking them for anxiety and depression. The remedies I prescribed for any manic episodes occurring around her period began to help immediately. She said that she found it quite incredible.

The key in prescribing is to cover all presenting symptoms and what I suspect to be the root cause. Modern medicine is not able to treat the cause, only the effect. That is why homeopathy can achieve a significant reduction or elimination of symptoms and promote a lasting cure.

Homeopathic remedies for anxiety and depression

There are many remedies listed under anxiety or depression in the homeopathic Materea Medica. Here are some examples of my most used remedies.

Aurum

Covers the most severe states of depression. The patient is in a state of melancholy, hopelessness, and depression. The future looks dark. They have no self-confidence. They can be grief stricken, suffering after a financial loss or carrying an exceptionally heavy workload or sense of duty. They feel sad, forsaken or even homesick. They can have a disgust of life and be full of despair. With any opportunity sought for self-destruction.

Carcinosin

Full of anxiety, especially of what might happen. Many fears, especially of failure, crowds, death and the dark. Particularly for people who have lived under severe fear for a long time, victims of abuse or childhood trauma. They can be fastidious or suffer from OCD. Passionate people who over-extend themselves or are very sympathetic.

Medorrhinum

This patient is usually sensitive, nervous, hurried, and anxious. They have a lack of self- control and do a lot of things to excess such as drinking, shopping, exercise. This remedy covers panic attacks, claustrophobia as well as bi-polar disorders and severe mood changes. I have seen this remedy work well in severe PMTD caused by extreme hormonal imbalances.

Why can I not shift my hypothyroid weight gain?

How can I shift my Hypothyroid weight gain? – This is a question that I am asked many times by new hypothyroid patients to my practice. Here I try to explain what is behind this phenomenon and how homeopathy and other natural support may be able to address this.

(Your Hypothyroid is not causing your weight gain. Your liver is).

Do you suffer with hypothyroidism and are struggling to lose weight? This may be due to fluid retention. And the fluid retention maybe caused by an overloaded or fatty liver. When the liver is overloaded the lymphatic system steps in to filter out toxins that the liver cannot cope with.

When the lymphatic system becomes congested with matter that it is unable to process it moves it around the body. It becomes trapped in pockets of fluid which is interpreted as weight gain. No matter how much dieting or exercise you do, you still cannot shift the weight. Even if you are on thyroid medication, which may even make matters worse.

Factors causing a fatty liver and therefore hypothyroid weight gain.

Thyroid medication.

It saturates the adrenals which in turn congests the liver.

Epstein-Barr virus

At some point you may have been exposed to this virus which would have lived in your liver before moving on to your thyroid. Some of the virus may have stayed in the liver feeding off antibiotics, pesticides, and heavy metals.

Unhealthy diet and alcohol

Fatty, sugary foods and alcohol which put a strain on your liver.

How Homeopathy can support the liver and adrenals

Homeopathic support remedies

Berberis and Chelidonium are the number one remedies for liver and kidney support, and I use them a lot in my practice especially when treating thyroid patients. It is gentle and effective in supporting and detoxing the liver and kidneys with no nasty side effects and helps with Hypothyroid weight gain.

Homeopathic constitutional remedy

This is your main remedy (prescribed by your homeopath) and as such does the most work in correcting imbalances in the body such as clearing the Epstein-Barr virus from your body. Because thyroid conditions are complicated and effect many organs such as the liver I usually have to prescribe support remedies as listed above to help things along.

Other liver support tools

Liver support supplements

Another tool that you can use to support your liver to keep it functioning at its best. I like this blend because it includes a very comprehensive mix of vitamins and minerals alongside herbs to provide maximum support for the liver.

Homeopathic remedies for sleep

Homeopathy for sleep problems

Sleep seems to be a big issue, especially with peri-menopause / menopause women or women experiencing any other hormone imbalances/disruption. It seems to be once you get into a pattern of waking at a certain time it’s hard to get out of causing sleepiness and irritability during the day and is especially disruptive if you work or are busy with certain obligations.

There are quite a few homeopathic remedies for sleep problems but arriving at the right homeopathic remedy for sleep problems takes some information gathering.

During the consultation I ask questions relating to your sleep.

These may include:

What time are you waking?

How many times are you waking?

What is causing you to wake (I.e., to urinate)

Are you currently withdrawing from any medication?

What dreams are you having?

Are you having trouble getting to sleep?

Are you waking at set or random times.?

What are you thinking/ worrying about when you wake?

Do you sleep deeply or is your sleep restless?

The answer to these questions help me arrive at your individualised homeopathic sleep remedy.

Homeopathic remedies for sleep may include:

Magnesium carb

I find myself prescribing this remedy over and over again for women in my practice usually due to hormone imbalances or fluctuations especially around the menopause transition. If you are waking between 2am and 3am and having trouble getting back to sleep then this remedy may be for you. Other characteristics include having anxious dreams and being tired and sleepy during the day. Magnesium carb can help with Homeopathy for sleep problems.

Carcinosin

Probably my second most prescribed remedy for sleep issues. For chronic or acute insomnia often bought on by anxiety or anticipation. The characteristic time of waking for this remedy is usually just after midnight or around 4am. Often from anxious dreams or shocks felt throughout the body.

Coffea cruda

This remedy is useful if you have a problem with falling to sleep, usually caused by flows of thoughts or a busy mind. Sleep can be restless with sudden starting. Dreams are pleasant, long or vivid. I tend to find myself prescribing this more to children and teens but not always.

Cocculus

Sleeplessness from extreme exertion, exhaustion or bought on by the nursing of others. Other causes may include maniacal sleeplessness or sleep deprivation. For me, not such a used one, but I thought I would include it in case useful.

Nux Vomica

Very useful if you are unable to sleep due to overindulgence in food or alcohol (we’ve all been there.) Also, useful if withdrawing from sleeping pills or alcohol. Characteristic of waking around 3 or 4am yet falling back to sleep just before it is time to wake up. Experiences nightmares or is irritable during the day.

Cannabis indica

I thought I would include this remedy because it is so useful for anyone withdrawing from smoking Cannabis and is having trouble sleeping as a result. It is also good for any stomach discomfort caused by withdrawal.

If you need a little extra help I also advise:

Daily yoga or exercise (earlier in the day.)

Avoiding alcohol, tea and obviously no coffee.

Valerian tea.

A bath before bed

Read instead of screen time before bed.

Supplements include:

Zinc

Vitamin C

Vitamin B1

Biotin

Treating Ulcerative colitis naturally with Homeopathy

Treating Ulcerative colitis naturally with Homeopathy

In this post I am going to discuss Homeopathy for Ulcerative colitis and many of the numerous natural treatments & remedies that it has to offer for all kinds of people.

A few months ago, I posted on social media that it had come to my attention that Ulcerative colitis was a side effect of the thyroid medication Levothyroxine. One of my patients had been able to wean herself off Levothyroxine whilst under my care for hypothyroidism with Homeopathy. However, she had become pregnant and was advised by her GP to go back on the drug in case her thyroid hormone levels were affected. This subsequently had a terrible effect on her health and shortly after going back on Levothyroxine she developed severe diarrhoea, abdominal cramping, fatigue and weight loss. She stopped taking the thyroid medication and I was able to treat the colitis with homeopathy.

Efficacy of homeopathy

What I found interesting was that she said she had joined an Ulcerative Colitis group on Facebook in which people were posting how their symptoms were not improving, even though they were under the care of their GP and taking standard medication for this condition. She was pleased as shortly after starting the appropriate remedy for this condition her symptoms had started to improve. At the time of writing, after two appointments, her symptoms had improved by 70%. Another Ulcerative colitis patient who I saw earlier this month reported that her symptoms were now 95% better after only two appointments. I felt prompted to write this blog as I to share that it is a condition that can be treated successfully with homeopathy without the need for prescription medication that A might not be that effective and B have harmful or unpleasant side effects.

I should stress that homeopathy is an individualised form of medicine where all symptoms, both emotional and physical are considered in depth. So, a remedy that may work for one person does not necessarily work for another. You have to match the individual symptoms to the corresponding remedy.

What is Ulcerative Colitis?

Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in which abnormal reactions of the immune system cause inflammation and ulcers on the inner lining of your large intestine and rectum.

Symptoms of ulcerative colitis

Ulcerative colitis symptoms can vary, depending on the severity of inflammation and where it occurs. Signs and symptoms may include:

  • Diarrhoea, often with blood or pus
  • Abdominal pain and cramping
  • Rectal pain
  • Rectal bleeding — passing small amount of blood with stool
  • Urgency to defecate
  • Inability to defecate despite urgency
  • Weight loss
  • Fatigue
  • Fever
  • In children, failure to grow

Possible contributing factors include:

  • Autoimmune component
  • Too much fat in diet
  • Emotional stress
  • Leaky gut syndrome
  • Lack of fibre in diet
  • Parasites
  • Wheat/Gluten
  • Lactose intolerance
  • Medication

General medical treatment includes:

Aminosalicylates (ASAs)

Aminosalicylates, also known as 5-ASAs, are a group of medicines commonly used to treat Ulcerative colitis. They are often the first medicines prescribed to people who are newly diagnosed with ulcerative colitis

The most common side effects of the 5-ASA drugs (occurring in more than 10 percent of people) include headache and malaise (a vague feeling of illness), cramps and gas. Watery diarrhoea is common with one of rarely used 5-ASA formulations (brand name: Dipentum), occurring in about 15% of people.

Uncommon side effects

Uncommon side effects include hair loss, skin rash, and a worsening of inflammation of the colon (colitis); these occur in 1 to 10 percent of people.

Corticosteroids

Corticosteroids are a more powerful type of medicine used to reduce inflammation. They can be used with or instead of 5-ASAs to treat a flare-up if 5-ASAs alone are not effective.

Corticosteroids provide patients with vast relief quickly, but they’re not a long-term solution. Side effects include weight gain, moon face, acne, irritability, and insomnia.

If used over a longer period of time side effects may include delayed healing of cuts, easily bruising, Increased blood pressure due to salt and water retention and diabetes.

Immunosuppressants

This class of medication controls or suppresses the body’s immune system response so it cannot cause ongoing inflammation, which may take several months to begin working, are generally used when aminosalicylates and corticosteroids haven’t been effective or have been only partially effective.

Side effects depend on the types and doses you take. High doses can cause serious side effects as your immune system is turned down, you’re at a higher risk of infection. Most common side effects include blood infections such as MRSA, fungal infections, and skin infections such as cellulitis.

Foods that may aggravate ulcerative colitis symptoms:

  • milk and other dairy products
  • coffee, tea, sodas, and other caffeinated products
  • alcohol
  • fruit and fruit juices
  • fried foods
  • high fat foods
  • spices
  • high fibre foods, including whole grain bread
  • Cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage and broccoli
  • beans and other legumes
  • steak, burgers, and other red meats
  • popcorn
  • peanuts
  • artificial colours and sweeteners

Foods to introduce for ulcerative colitis:

  • Slippery elm bark
  • Raw cabbage juice
  • Alkaline broth (cabbage juice, potato water and Chlorophyll or carrot)
  • Psyllium husks (non-acute stage)
  • Detoxification fasts
  • Rice, soya and millet generally well tolerated.

Supplements for ulcerative colitis:

Lactobacillus

Magnesium, Iron, Calcium, Potassium and Zinc

Curcumin (500mg daily)

Homeopathy for ulcerative colitis.

Remedies include:

Colocynthis

Extreme irritability. Symptoms often caused by anger and indignation. Depressed and joyless.

Agonizing pains in abdomen causing patients to bend double. The pain is worse from the least amount of eating and drinking. Diarrhoea caused by pain, anger and indignation. Painful haemorrhoids.

Why do I still have symptoms even though I am on thyroid medication?

Why am I still have symptoms even though I am on thyroid medication and my blood results show up as normal range?

The adrenal fatigue and thyroid connection.

Why do I still have thyroid symptoms even though I am still on thyroid medication? That is a question I hear a from new patients who come to see me seeking treatment for their thyroid condition even though they are on Thyroid medication. If hypothyroid symptoms such as low body temperature, fatigue, dry skin, constipation, hair loss and weight gain persist despite thyroid medication and blood tests showing a normal range there must be another component.

It may be a result of a low adrenal reserve. Low adrenal reserve occurs when you’re under a great deal of stress and, as a result, your adrenal glands just can’t keep up with your body’s demands for hormones.

Adrenal gland connection

When the adrenals glands are weakened or exhausted, the ability of the adrenals to handle the stress associated with normal bodily functions and energy requirements is often compromised. To ensure survival, the adrenals force a down-regulation of energy production, putting the body in a state of catabolism. In other words, the body slows down its metabolism to reduce the workload of a body that needs rest. In times of stress, this is exactly what the body needs. The thyroid gland, which controls metabolism, will then down-regulates its activity by producing less hormones T4 and T3. But at the same time thyroid medication is trying to ramp up metabolic function and energy output causing a conflict of interest in the body. It may lead to a temporary relief of symptoms and a slight boost in energy at first. Laboratory levels of T4, T3 and TSH may appear improved. However, this is often short lived. Ultimately, fatigue returns as the thyroid medication further weakens the pre-existing adrenal fatigue condition and often precipitates an adrenal crisis.

Thyroxine conversion

Thyroxine (T4) has to be converted into an active thyroid hormone (T3) in order to work. If you have a low adrenal reserve this does not happen, and your body can become toxic with unused T4. T3 also has to be passed into cells which is difficult if there is adrenal insufficiency and again causes more toxicity, which in some cases leads to Addisons disease. So, the cause of still feeling dreadful even though you are on thyroid medication is due to the adrenals, which is something not generally considered by medical doctors as they do not recognise low adrenal reserve.

Blood levels

If your thyroid medication is not being used properly and not being taken up into body tissues, it will still cause blood levels to be normal or even raised. This is very common, but a patient may never be well unless adrenal insufficiency is addressed. It is estimated that 70% of people taking thyroid replacement medications continue to complain of symptoms. It is not unusual to have concurrent presenting symptoms of both low adrenal and low thyroid functions. Patients who are diagnosed as hypothyroid after a traumatic and stressful event such as pregnancy, accident, infection or an emotional trauma such as divorce or death of a loved one would be a prime example of why thyroid medication is not working. Because their adrenals were being compromised to begin with. In order for the patient to start to feel better the adrenals need to be supported to begin to work effectively and efficiently.

Adrenilinum

In my homeopathic practice one of the thyroid support remedies that I often prescribe is Adrenalinum. As you can see it has many characteristics of an under active thyroid.

These include:

Despondent

Nervous

Anxious and restless

Lack of interest in anything

Aversion to mental activity

Cannot concentrate on thoughts

Rheumatic pains in limbs

Ravenous hunger

Great sleepiness and drowsiness

Addisons disease

Adrenalinum is a great remedy to have in my arsenal of remedies because it works to support the adrenal glands in times of stress when extra pressure is put on it leading to low adrenal reserve.

Other actions you can take to support adrenal reserve include:

Go to bed by 10pm for maximum sleep during which most cortisol production happens.

Reduce stress with:

Yoga

Meditation

Listening to calming music

Reducing screen time

Diet

Eat a healthy Organic diet

Sufficient salt and Potassium in a ratio of 5 Potassium to 1 salt.

Potassium is found in bananas and avocados

Avoid coffee and alcohol and refined carbohydrates.

Increase Vitamin C as it is absorbed in times of stress

Other important Supplements include:

Vitamin B5 &B6

Liquorice

Siberian Ginseng

Omega 3’s

Coenzyme Q10

Manganese

Magnesium

Zinc

Chromium

Copper

Freeform Flavonoids

Adrenalinum is just one of the remedies in my homeopathic toolbox that I find appropriate for certain people if the symptoms fit. But I cannot stress enough that the most important and effective way to deal with an under active thyroid naturally, is to undergo treatment with a qualified homeopath who will work with you to treat your symptoms in a safe, holistic, non toxic way. Enabling long lasting healing.
