PANS/PANDAS and Mould Exposure: Is There a Connection?

Could mould exposure contribute to PANS and PANDAS symptoms?

Could mould exposure be contributing to your child’s PANS/PANDAS symptoms? It’s a question I’m hearing more and more from parents in my practice.

PANS/PANDAS can cause a sudden and dramatic change in a child’s behaviour and wellbeing. Symptoms may include OCD, tics, anxiety, rage, sensory sensitivities, restricted eating, sleep problems and emotional or behavioural changes.

While infections and immune dysfunction are central to the PANS/PANDAS picture, there may be other factors worth considering too — including the child’s environment.

One of these is mould exposure.

What is the connection between mould and PANS/PANDAS?

We know that damp and mouldy environments can affect health, particularly through respiratory and allergic responses. Certain moulds can also produce substances called mycotoxins, which have been studied for their potential effects on inflammatory and immune pathways. Mycotoxins, which are toxic compounds effect children with PANS/ PANDAS, because they can aggravate neurological symptoms like cognitive dysfunction, headaches, and behavioral changes. Mycotoxins such as ochratoxin and trichothecenes can cross the blood-brain barrier, directly affecting brain function and potentially leading to increased anxiety, mood swings, or tics.

What I see in my homeopathy practice

As a homeopath specialising in children with complex health concerns, I have noticed a high proportion of the children I see with PANS/PANDAS have had some history of mould exposure.

Sometimes there has been obvious mould in the family home. In other cases, parents have discovered previous water damage, dampness or a musty environment. Occasionally, exposure has occurred at school or nursery or gym.

I see it as one piece of a much bigger puzzle.

When taking a child’s history, I therefore think it is useful to ask about environmental exposures.

Could mould make PANS/PANDAS symptoms worse?

If a child is living or spending significant time in a damp or mould-affected environment, it makes sense to investigate and address the environmental problem rather than ignoring it.

Removing the source of damp and mould is an important first step.

How can homeopathy help with PANS/PANDAS?

In my practice, I use individualised homeopathic treatment based on the child’s particular pattern of symptoms and their wider health history.

Rather than treating “mould toxicity” as a diagnosis, I look at the child as a whole.

This can include exploring:

  • The child’s PANS/PANDAS symptoms
  • Previous infections
  • The timing of symptom onset
  • Environmental and mould exposure
  • Sleep and emotional wellbeing
  • Sensory sensitivities
  • Eating difficulties
  • What makes symptoms better or worse
  • The child’s overall health history

My aim is to develop an individualised approach and plan that supports the child and their wellbeing. This includes a main constitutional remedy, remedies to clear bacterial sensitivity, organ support remedies and remedies to detox substances such as mould.

What should you do if you suspect mould?

If your child has PANS/PANDAS and you suspect mould exposure, start by looking at the environment.

Look for:

  • Visible mould
  • Damp patches
  • Condensation
  • Musty smells
  • Previous leaks or flooding
  • Water damage
  • Areas where mould repeatedly returns

Most importantly, address the underlying moisture problem.

It is also important not to assume that every symptom is caused by mould. PANS/PANDAS are complex conditions, and children can have multiple contributing factors.

PANS, PANDAS and mould: another piece of the puzzle?

There is still a great deal we don’t know about the relationship between mould exposure, the immune system and PANS/PANDAS.

But in my clinical experience, mould exposure comes up frequently when taking a detailed history from children with these conditions.

Could it be one of several factors affecting an already vulnerable immune system?

What I do know is that looking at the whole child — and not just the diagnosis — can provide valuable insights. But most importantly mould exposure can be detoxed, safely and effectively from the body using the appropriate homeopathic remedies.
