Why Can’t I Lose Weight in Perimenopause? The Hidden Thyroid, Hormone and Stress Connection

Have you found yourself asking why can’t Iose weight in menopause despite eating well, exercising regularly, and doing everything you used to do to stay healthy?

If you’re in your 40s or 50s and struggling to lose weight, you’re not alone. Many women notice changes in their bodies during perimenopause that seem to happen overnight. Clothes become tighter around the waist, energy levels drop, and weight loss becomes increasingly difficult.

While many people assume this is simply an inevitable part of ageing, the reality is often more complex. Hormonal changes, thyroid function, stress levels, and sleep quality can all play a significant role in weight gain during perimenopause.

Understanding these underlying factors can help you take a more informed and compassionate approach to your health.

Why Can’t I Lose Weight in Perimenopause?

Perimenopause is the transition period before menopause when hormone levels begin to fluctuate. During this time, levels of oestrogen and progesterone can rise and fall unpredictably.

These hormonal changes can affect:

  • Metabolism
  • Appetite and cravings
  • Blood sugar regulation
  • Fat storage
  • Sleep quality
  • Mood and motivation

Many women notice that weight begins to accumulate around the abdomen, even if their diet and exercise habits have not changed significantly.

This is not simply a matter of willpower. Your body is responding to significant hormonal shifts that can influence how efficiently it burns energy and stores fat.

Is It Really Just About Eating Less and Exercising More?

One of the most frustrating things women hear is that they simply need to eat less and move more.

While nutrition and physical activity are important, they are only part of the picture.

If your hormones are out of balance, your thyroid is under-functioning, or your stress hormones are elevated, your body may resist weight loss despite your best efforts.

This is why many women feel stuck. They are following healthy habits but not seeing results because the underlying causes have not been addressed.

The Thyroid-Perimenopause Connection

The symptoms of thyroid dysfunction and perimenopause often overlap.

Common symptoms include:

  • Fatigue
  • Brain fog
  • Weight gain
  • Anxiety
  • Low mood
  • Poor concentration
  • Hair thinning
  • Irregular periods

Many women assume these symptoms are solely due to perimenopause when, in some cases, thyroid function may also be contributing.

Even when thyroid blood tests are reported as “normal,” some women continue to experience symptoms that suggest their body is struggling to maintain hormonal balance.

Supporting thyroid health can be an important part of understanding unexplained weight gain and low energy during midlife.

How Stress Hormones Affect Weight Loss

Chronic stress is one of the most overlooked contributors to weight gain.

When we experience ongoing stress, the body produces higher levels of cortisol, often referred to as the stress hormone.

Elevated cortisol can:

  • Increase cravings for sugary and high-carbohydrate foods
  • Promote abdominal fat storage
  • Disrupt blood sugar balance
  • Affect sleep quality
  • Contribute to fatigue and burnout

Many women in perimenopause are juggling demanding careers, caring responsibilities, ageing parents, financial pressures, and changing family dynamics.

The body does not distinguish between emotional stress and physical stress. Over time, chronic stress can make weight loss feel almost impossible.

Why Sleep Matters More Than You Think

Sleep is one of the foundations of hormonal health.

Unfortunately, sleep disturbances are extremely common during perimenopause.

Night sweats, anxiety, racing thoughts, and fluctuating hormones can all interfere with restorative sleep.

Poor sleep can:

  • Increase hunger hormones
  • Reduce insulin sensitivity
  • Increase cravings
  • Lower energy for exercise
  • Raise cortisol levels

A lack of quality sleep creates a cycle that can make weight gain worse and weight loss more difficult.

Signs Your Hormones May Be Out of Balance

If you are experiencing several of the following symptoms, hormones may be playing a role:

  • Unexplained weight gain
  • Difficulty losing weight
  • Fatigue
  • Brain fog
  • Mood swings
  • Anxiety
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Irregular periods
  • Low libido
  • Increased sensitivity to stress

These symptoms are often interconnected and may indicate that your body needs additional support.

A Holistic Approach to Weight Gain in Perimenopause

Rather than focusing solely on calories, a holistic approach considers the whole person.

This may include:

  • Supporting hormone balance
  • Assessing thyroid function
  • Improving sleep quality
  • Managing stress
  • Supporting gut health
  • Addressing nutritional deficiencies
  • Understanding individual health history

Every woman is unique, which is why a personalised approach is often more effective than a one-size-fits-all plan.

How Homeopathy Can Help

Homeopathy takes an individualised approach, where a carefully selected homeopathic remedy aims to support the body’s natural ability to restore balance and resilience. Homeopathy can form part of a broader holistic strategy that supports wellbeing during this important stage of life.

You Don’t Have to Struggle Alone

Weight gain during perimenopause is often a sign that the body is asking for support, not punishment.

If you’ve been eating well, exercising regularly, and still feeling frustrated by stubborn weight gain, fatigue, or hormonal symptoms, it may be time to look beyond calories and consider the bigger picture.

By understanding the connections between hormones, thyroid health, stress, sleep, and overall wellbeing, it becomes possible to work with your body rather than against it.

Sophie’s Case Study

When Sophie first came to see me, she was in her late 40s and experiencing perimenopause. Although her thyroid levels were still within the conventional “normal” range, she was struggling with a number of symptoms, including:

  • Thinning hair
  • Fatigue and energy slumps
  • Low mood, mood swings, and irritability
  • Dry skin
  • Weight gain around her abdomen and difficulty losing weight
  • Headaches before her period
  • Heavy menstrual bleeding on days two and three, including flooding
  • Irregular periods that were either early or late
  • High stress levels and panic attacks related to work, which were affecting her sleep

Treatment Plan

I prescribed a selection of remedies tailored to Sophie’s hormonal symptoms, emotional state, and physical presentation. In addition, I included a miasmatic remedy to help address her sleep difficulties and panic attacks.

Sophie also had a long history of taking the contraceptive pill. In homeopathic practice, this is often considered an important factor to address, as it may contribute to hormonal imbalances associated with perimenopause and thyroid-related symptoms.

Alongside her constitutional remedies, I prescribed:

  • Thyroid support remedies
  • Liver and kidney support remedies, as her premenstrual headaches suggested that her liver was under additional strain from fluctuating hormone levels

Follow-Up Results

At her second appointment, Sophie reported significant improvements.

Her mood had improved considerably, her energy levels were much better, and she felt noticeably less stressed. As a result, her sleep had improved, and she no longer felt the overwhelming need for afternoon naps.

Other positive changes included:

  • Complete resolution of her premenstrual headaches
  • Reduced hair loss
  • A menstrual cycle that arrived on time
  • Significantly lighter periods

Given her positive response, I repeated most of the original prescription and added a remedy to address ongoing digestive issues and bloating.

Continued Progress

At her next follow-up, Sophie reported that her improvements had continued. She was delighted to find that she was also losing weight more easily.

This may have been related to reduced stress levels and improved hormonal balance, which can positively influence metabolism and overall wellbeing.

Homeopathy for Asthma

Homeopathy for Asthma: A Natural Approach to Relief

Many people don’t initially seek homeopathy for asthma as their primary concern. Instead, they mention it alongside other health issues that they or their child might be suffering with such as eczema—often assuming it’s something they’ll have to live with long-term. This belief is usually shaped by years of reliance on inhalers and conventional treatments. I do however treat their asthma symptoms alongside their other symptoms and when asked about their asthma symptoms in follow up consultations patients are frequently surprised to realise they’ve used their inhaler far less—or sometimes not at all. Studies show that homeopathy can be effective in asthma treatment but I’ve yet to see a patient who hasn’t responded well to the right individualised remedies for this condition.

What Is Asthma?

Asthma comes from the Greek word meaning “to pant or gasp for air.” It is a chronic respiratory condition involving inflammation and narrowing of the airways (bronchioles), making breathing difficult.

In the United Kingdom alone:

  • 5.4 million people live with asthma
  • 3–4 people die each day from asthma-related causes
  • 1 in 3 people experience asthma symptoms at some point in life
  • 1.1 million children receive treatment, making it the most common long-term condition among young people

Types of Asthma

Dry Asthma

  • Wheezing, shortness of breath, dry cough
  • Sudden, intense, and short-lived attacks
  • Often linked to allergic reactions

Humid Asthma

  • More severe and prolonged
  • Excess mucus and ongoing breathlessness
  • Slower onset but longer-lasting symptoms

Causes and Triggers of Asthma

When using homeopathy for asthma, identifying the root cause is essential. Triggers can include:

  • Genetic or inherited tendencies
  • Emotional factors (stress, suppressed emotions, fear, anger, shock)
  • Allergies (e.g. dairy, pet dander)
  • Environmental factors (cold, damp climates)
  • Reactions following vaccinations
  • Skin conditions like eczema, especially when suppressed with steroid creams

Understanding these contributing factors allows for a more personalised and effective treatment approach.

Why Individualised Treatment Matters

Homeopathy focuses on the individual—not just the condition. To find the right remedy, it’s important to assess:

  • Presence of mucus or catarrh
  • Weather-related triggers
  • Emotional or dietary triggers
  • Timing and frequency of attacks

This detailed picture helps determine the most suitable homeopathic remedy for asthma.

Common Homeopathic Remedies for Asthma

While there are hundreds of remedies, some commonly used options include:

Blatta

  • Wheezing, chest heaviness
  • Excess mucus
  • Worse in damp weather and at night (9–10pm)

Kali Carbonicum

  • Breathing difficulty with persistent cough
  • Worse between 2–4am and in cold air
  • Associated with anxiety and past lung conditions

Arsenicum Album

  • Alternating dry and loose cough
  • Worse in cold air, better with movement
  • May alternate with eczema

Lobelia

  • Tight chest with a lump sensation
  • Tickling cough and pre-attack prickling feeling

Carbo Vegetabilis

  • Severe air hunger and bloating
  • Often linked to a history of whooping cough

Herbal Support for Asthma

Certain herbal remedies can complement homeopathic care. For example:

  • Lobelia inflata – a natural bronchodilator
  • Grindelia robusta
  • Aralia racemosa
  • Verbascum

These can help support respiratory function alongside a tailored homeopathic plan.

Homeopathy for Neuropathy in Hypothyroidism

Homeopathic Remedies for Neuropathy in Hypothyroidism

Tingling, numbness, or burning sensations in the hands and feet—known as Peripheral Neuropathy—can sometimes show up alongside Hypothyroidism. It’s a frustrating combination, and one that can be addressed when a patient begins homeopathic treatment for a thyroid disorder. Because homeopathy is a holistic form of medicine all areas get addressed as treatment progresses. Here I’ve tried to outline why neuropathy can be associated with thyroid conditions and some appropriate homeopathic remedies for neuropathy in hypothyroidism.

People with Hypothyroidism are more prone to Peripheral Neuropathy because low thyroid hormone levels affect nerves in several overlapping ways:

Book a free 15 minute chat here

  1. Slowed nerve function

Thyroid hormones help regulate how fast nerves send signals. When levels are low:

  • Nerve conduction slows down
  • Signals become weaker or delayed
This leads to symptoms like tingling, numbness, or “pins and needles.”
  1. Tissue swelling & compression

Hypothyroidism can cause fluid retention and tissue swelling (called myxedema).

  • This swelling can compress nerves, especially in tight spaces
  • A classic example is carpal tunnel syndrome (median nerve compression in the wrist)
  1. Impaired nerve repair

Thyroid hormones are important for:

  • Nerve maintenance
  • Repair of damaged nerve fibers

Low levels can reduce the body’s ability to heal or regenerate nerves, making damage more likely or longer lasting.

  1. Associated deficiencies

Hypothyroidism is often linked with deficiencies that also affect nerves, such as:

These can worsen or independently cause neuropathy.

  1. Autoimmune link

If hypothyroidism is due to Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis:

  • The immune system may also target other tissues
  • This can contribute indirectly to nerve inflammation or damage
  1. Metabolic effects

Slowed metabolism can:

  • Reduce blood flow to nerves
  • Affect how nerves use energy
Over time, this can make nerves more vulnerable to dysfunction.

Homeopathic Remedies for Neuropathy in Hypothyroidism

When treating patients with a hypothyroidism most benefit from a prescription of what we call a main constitutional remedy plus thyroid specific combination remedies. However some still need more symptom specific acute remedies to address the neuropathy symptoms, some of which I have I have listed here to give you an idea of their differences and actions.

Hypericum perforatum

A well-known remedy for nerve-related pain.
Often used when sensations feel sharp, shooting, or electric, especially along a nerve pathway.

Arsenicum album

Commonly chosen for burning pains, particularly when they feel worse at night.
Restlessness and a need for warmth often go along with this picture.

Phosphorus

Considered where there is tingling, numbness, and sensitivity.
Often suits those who feel mentally and physically drained.

Calcarea phosphorica

Used in cases where there’s general weakness or slow recovery.
May be helpful when the body feels depleted or low in energy.

Lycopodium

Sometimes selected when symptoms are more pronounced on one side (often the right), or when nerve issues are accompanied by digestive imbalance.

With homeopathy It’s very important to look at the individual symptoms; so for example when, where and how you experience the symptoms. But I regularly see in my practice homeopathy bringing about a long-lasting cure, where patients no longer have to suffer what can be very uncomfortable and inconvenient symptoms of neuropathy and overall comfort and wellbeing is restored.

If you would like to begin your homeopathic journey to facilitate a long lasting change in hypothyroidism as well as neuropathy then book in for a free 15 minute Zoom call to see how I can help you. Book here.

Homeopathy for Candida (and the Hashimoto’s Connection)

Homeopathy for Candida (and the Hashimoto’s Connection)

Candida, or Candida albicans, is a type of yeast naturally present in our bodies. Normally harmless, it can sometimes multiply excessively and cause yeast infections, commonly known as thrush. Candida infections can affect men, women, children, and babies, appearing in the mouth, on the skin (such as armpits and groin), around fingernails, in the gastrointestinal tract, and most frequently in the vaginal area. Is this blog I would like to show how homeopathy for candida (and the hashimotos’s connection) can effectively help in treating symptoms and why there might be a connection with Hashimoto’s.

What Causes Candida Overgrowth?

Healthy bacteria in the body usually keep Candida in check. However, certain conditions disrupt this balance or weaken the immune system, allowing Candida to overgrow. Common factors contributing to Candida overgrowth include:

  • Antibiotic use (which kills beneficial bacteria)

  • Diets high in sugar and refined carbohydrates

  • Excessive alcohol consumption

  • Weakened immune system

  • Use of oral contraceptives

  • Diabetes

  • High stress levels

  • Pregnancy (due to hormonal changes)

  • Frequent douching or use of harsh feminine hygiene products

Symptoms of Candida Infection

Oral Candida (Thrush)

  • Redness and white coating on the tongue

  • Unpleasant taste in the mouth

  • Soreness in the mouth, gums, and tongue

  • Difficulty eating and drinking

  • Impaired taste sensation

  • Bad breath

Vaginal Candida

  • Intense itching and irritation

  • Redness and swelling

  • White, cottage cheese-like discharge (usually odorless)

  • Burning sensation during urination

  • Pain during intercourse

Skin Candida

  • Redness and irritation, especially in skin folds

  • Rash-like appearance

  • Cracked or broken skin

  • Itching and burning sensation

The Candida-Thyroid Connection: Candida and Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis

Emerging research suggests a significant link between Candida overgrowth and autoimmune thyroid conditions like Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. Candida can impare digestive health, affecting nutrient absorption and weakening the immune system. This can potentially trigger or worsen autoimmune thyroid disorders.

Candida may also contribute to “leaky gut syndrome” (intestinal permeability), where the intestinal lining becomes damaged. This allows toxins, bacteria, and undigested food particles to enter the bloodstream, triggering systemic inflammation and autoimmune responses such as Hashimoto’s.

Case Study: Successful Homeopathic Treatment

Patient: Vicky, diagnosed with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and vaginal Candida infection.
Symptoms: General Hashimoto’s symptoms such as fatigue, dry skin etc plus candida symptoms such as thick yellow vaginal discharge, vaginal itching, and a white-coated tongue with a midline crack.
Treatment: Homeopathic remedies Calcarea Carbonica and Candida albicans nosode.
Outcome: Complete resolution of thrush symptoms within one month showing that homeopathy for candida can be very effective.

This case highlights how detailed symptom analysis — such as discharge colour, consistency, and tongue appearance — guides the homeopathic remedy selection process.

Homeopathy for Candida

Primary Constitutional Remedies

  • Sepia
Ideal for chronic Candida with hormonal imbalances. Symptoms include yellow vaginal discharge, bearing-down sensations, irritability, and cravings for sour foods. Often used when itching doesn’t improve with scratching.

  • Calcarea Carbonica
Suited for individuals who feel cold, sweat easily, and have sluggish metabolism. Useful in chronic yeast infections with milky or thick yellow discharge and itching around menstruation.

  • Candida Albicans (Nosode)
Targets yeast infection symptoms directly and supports constitutional treatment of chronic Candida.

  • Thuja Occidentalis
Helpful for fungal infections of skin and nails, chronic recurring infections, and skin growths like warts.

  • Pulsatilla
For mild-natured people with changeable symptoms, thick creamy discharge, and emotional sensitivity. Symptoms often improve in fresh air and worsen indoors.

Lifestyle Tips to Support Treatment

  • Reduce sugar and refined carbohydrate intake

  • Include probiotic-rich foods in your diet

  • Wear breathable cotton underwear

  • Avoid douching and harsh soaps

  • Manage stress through relaxation techniques

  • Maintain good hygiene without over-cleansing

Important Notes

  • Always consult a qualified homeopath for personalised treatment.

Conclusion

Homeopathy for Candida focuses on addressing the constitutional imbalances that allow yeast overgrowth to persist. While individual remedies provide symptom relief, constitutional treatment tailored to the whole person—including thyroid health—is often the most effective approach.

Understanding the connection between Candida and thyroid health highlights the importance of treating the body as a whole rather than isolated symptoms. With proper remedy selection and holistic care, many find lasting relief from chronic Candida issues.

Homeopathy for PMS and Perimenopausal Periods

Homeopathy for PMS and perimenopausal periods offers a natural, gentle way to ease the emotional and physical discomfort many women experience during their menstrual cycles and hormonal transitions. From painful cramps and mood swings to irregular or heavy periods in your 40s, homeopathy works with your body to restore balance without relying on synthetic hormones. Homeopathy helps relieve emotional and physical discomfort without synthetic hormones or side effects which has been shown to work in clinical trials.

What Is PMS — and Why Does It Worsen Over Time?

Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) affects up to 90% of women at some point. Symptoms like irritability, fatigue, bloating, flooding, headaches and breast tenderness can interfere with daily life — and for many, they intensify during perimenopause.

As your hormones begin to fluctuate in your late 30s and 40s, oestrogen and progesterone become imbalanced, which can worsen PMS symptoms. That’s why homeopathy for PMS and perimenopausal periods is particularly helpful — it supports your body through both cyclical and transitional hormonal shifts.

Why Choose Homeopathy for PMS and Perimenopausal Periods?

Homeopathy for PMS and perimenopausal periods focuses on identifying and addressing your unique symptoms and hormonal patterns. It treats you as a whole person — not just a set of symptoms.

Benefits include:

  • Reducing period pain and cramping

  • Balancing mood swings and anxiety

  • Easing heavy or irregular bleeding

  • Supporting emotional well-being

  • Regulating the menstrual cycle naturally

How Homeopathy Supports Hormonal Balance

Homeopathy uses highly diluted natural substances that stimulate the body’s own healing mechanisms. Common remedies for PMS and perimenopausal periods include:

  • Sepia – for irritability, exhaustion, and hormonal flatness

  • Pulsatilla – for tearfulness, sensitivity, and irregular periods

  • Magnesia Phos – for period cramps and spasmodic pain

  • Lachesis – for heavy bleeding, hot flushes, and intense mood swings

  • Folliculinum- for long use of contraceptive pill, Irritable, prolonged periods, bleeding at ovulation

These remedies are often part of a personalised plan tailored to your specific symptoms and hormonal history.

The Contraceptive Pill: A Hidden Factor in Hormonal Imbalances

Many women turn to the contraceptive pill to regulate their cycles, reduce period pain, or manage PMS. However, long-term use of hormonal contraceptives can sometimes contribute to hormonal imbalances, which may make the symptoms of PMS and perimenopause more pronounced later in life.

Why the Contraceptive Pill Can Be a Contributory Factor:

  • Disrupts Natural Hormonal Rhythm: The contraceptive pill works by suppressing the natural menstrual cycle and altering hormone production. Over time, this can lead to a disruption in the body’s natural hormonal rhythm, making it harder for the body to adjust when hormones start fluctuating during perimenopause.

  • Progesterone Imbalance: Many pills contain synthetic versions of progesterone (progestin), which can affect the body’s own progesterone production. This imbalance can result in heavier periods, worse PMS, or erratic cycles as you approach perimenopause.

  • Liver Stress: The pill places a strain on the liver, as it processes synthetic hormones. This can impair the body’s ability to detoxify and balance hormones naturally, contributing to hormonal symptoms.

How Homeopathy Can Help Detoxify and Restore Balance:

If you’ve used the contraceptive pill for a long period, homeopathy can be a gentle and effective way to help your body detox and restore natural hormonal balance.

  • Liver Support: Homeopathic remedies can help support liver function, assisting your body in eliminating accumulated toxins and synthetic hormones that may still be affecting your system.

  • Restoring Hormonal Harmony: Homeopathic remedies that work with your body’s natural rhythms to restore hormonal balance, easing symptoms like mood swings, heavy periods, or erratic cycles caused by hormonal contraception.

  • Personalised Detox: Homeopathic detox remedies are tailored to your unique constitution and symptoms, ensuring that your body is supported through the process of rebalance and healing.

If you’re experiencing hormonal shifts after long-term use of the contraceptive pill, a detox program with homeopathy may be a helpful solution. As part of a holistic approach, it can bring long-term relief and help you feel more in tune with your body’s natural cycles again.

Why Periods Become Problematic in Perimenopause

During perimenopause, ovulation becomes less consistent, leading to oestrogen dominance or progesterone deficiency. The result? Heavier bleeding, shorter cycles, heightened PMS, and more emotional instability.

Homeopathy for PMS and perimenopausal periods addresses the root of these hormonal changes by restoring regulation to the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis — the command centre of your hormones.

When to Seek Help

You might benefit from homeopathic support if:

  • PMS symptoms interfere with work or relationships

  • Your periods have become heavier, shorter, or more painful

  • You feel emotionally unbalanced or burnt out

  • You’re transitioning off hormonal contraception

  • You want a natural solution to manage perimenopausal symptoms

Conclusion: Natural Hormonal Support That Works

You don’t have to suffer through your cycle or dread perimenopause. Whether you’re dealing with monthly PMS or unpredictable periods especially in your 40s, homeopathy for PMS and perimenopausal periods offers safe, effective, and personalised relief.

Mould Toxicity and Thyroid Dysfunction: The Overlooked Connection & How Homeopathy Can Help

Can Mould Exposure Cause Thyroid Problems?

Mould toxicity and thyroid dysfunction are an often-overlooked but increasingly recognised pair in chronic health conditions. Many people suffering from unexplained fatigue, brain fog, or weight gain are diagnosed with thyroid issues—but what if these symptoms are actually rooted in mould toxicity?

Emerging research and clinical case studies suggest a strong link between mould toxicity and thyroid dysfunction, particularly in cases of hypothyroidism, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, and even autoimmune-driven thyroid disorders. As a homeopath, I’ve seen firsthand how mould exposure can act as a trigger for deep hormonal and immune imbalances—yet it’s rarely considered during thyroid treatment.

What Is Mould Toxicity? Symptoms and Causes

Mould toxicity refers to the accumulation of mycotoxins, harmful substances produced by certain moulds. These toxins can be inhaled, ingested, or absorbed through the skin—especially in water-damaged buildings, damp basements, or contaminated food.

Common Mould Toxicity Symptoms:

  • Chronic fatigue

  • Brain fog and memory issues

  • Respiratory problems

  • Hormonal imbalance

  • Anxiety or depression

  • Autoimmune symptoms

Because these symptoms overlap with thyroid disease, the link between mould and thyroid problems is often missed.

How Mould Affects the Thyroid Gland

1. Triggers Chronic Inflammation

Mould exposure stimulates an immune response that leads to systemic inflammation, which can damage thyroid tissue and disrupt hormone production.

2. May Lead to Autoimmune Thyroid Disease

Mycotoxins increase gut permeability (leaky gut), a known trigger for autoimmune conditions like Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and Graves’ disease.

3. Acts as an Endocrine Disruptor

Some mycotoxins mimic or block hormone function, acting as endocrine disruptors and interfering with thyroid hormone signalling.

4. Impairs Liver Detox and Hormone Conversion

The liver plays a key role in converting T4 to T3, the active thyroid hormone. Mould toxins burden detox pathways, slowing this process and contributing to functional hypothyroidism.

Homeopathy for Thyroid Disorders and Mould Toxicity

Homeopathy is a holistic system of medicine that stimulates the body’s natural healing response. For individuals suffering from thyroid dysfunction caused by mould exposure, homeopathy provides non-toxic, individualised remedies that address both the physical and emotional layers of illness.

Benefits of Homeopathy for Thyroid and Mould Issues:

  • Supports immune and hormonal balance

  • Gently stimulates detoxification of mycotoxins

  • Addresses chronic fatigue and brain fog

  • Improves emotional resilience and sleep

  • Safe for long-term use and compatible with other treatments

Best Homeopathic Remedies for Mould-Related Thyroid Problems

Remedy Indications
Thyroidinum Supports underactive thyroid; useful in hypothyroidism or glandular dysfunction
Calcarea Carbonica Fatigue, weight gain, cold sensitivity, sluggish metabolism
Sepia Hormonal imbalance, especially in women; emotional detachment, irritability
Natrum Muriaticum Hashimoto’s with history of grief or emotional suppression
Arsenicum Album Environmental sensitivity, anxiety, exhaustion from mould exposure
Natrum Sulphuricum For liver detox, respiratory issues, and lingering effects of damp or mouldy environments

⚠️ Note: Always consult a qualified homeopath for personalised remedy selection.

Holistic Detox Tips to Support Thyroid Healing

Alongside homeopathy, integrating detox-friendly lifestyle practices can significantly enhance recovery from mould toxicity and support thyroid function.

Try These Natural Detox Strategies:

  • Air Quality: Use HEPA filters and dehumidifiers; identify and remediate any areas affected by mould in your home or workplace.

  • Detox Binders: Natural binders such as activated charcoal, bentonite clay, and chlorella help absorb and eliminate mycotoxins from the gut.

  • Castor Oil Packs: Applying warm castor oil packs over the liver or abdomen can promote lymphatic drainage, reduce inflammation, and support liver detoxification.

  • EMF Detox Remedies: Excessive exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMFs) can compound stress on the body. Remedies such as homeopathic Electricitas, Radiation detox blends, and earthing practices (barefoot contact with natural ground) can help restore energetic balance.

  • Clean Nutrition: Focus on an anti-inflammatory diet rich in vegetables, good fats, and clean protein. Avoid processed foods, sugar, and potential mould-contaminated items like peanuts and grains.

  • Hydration: Drink plenty of pure water, ideally with a pinch of sea salt or electrolytes to support cellular detox.

  • Restorative Sleep: Aim for 7–9 hours of quality sleep to allow for hormonal regulation and deep cellular repair.

These tools work synergistically with homeopathic treatment to support full-body healing and detoxification.

Heal the Thyroid by Addressing Mould Toxicity Naturally

Mould toxicity is a hidden root cause of many thyroid conditions, from subclinical hypothyroidism to full-blown autoimmune disease. Fortunately, homeopathy offers a gentle, effective path to healing by supporting detoxification, immune regulation, and hormonal balance.

Homeopathy for Hypothyroidism/ Hashimotos

Homeopathy for Hypothyroidism/Hashimoto’s

I have been treating Hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s since qualifying as a homeopath in 2016. Since then, I have helped many women come off thyroid medication or prevented them from having to go on it in the first place.

What might have been the trigger

With homeopathy for hypothyroidism/Hashimoto’s, we look at what might have been the trigger for your condition, plus any toxicity that needs to be cleared such the female contraceptive pill or mould toxicity, which are both found to be linked to thyroid issues.

Looking at the mental and emotional picture

Most women suffer with very similar physical symptoms when they have a thyroid dysfunction such as fatigue, weight gain, dry skin, loss of hair etc. Because homeopathy is an individualised form of medicine, to ascertain which remedy is right for a particular patient we need to examine and take into consideration how they are feeling mentally and emotionally. This along with the physical symptoms will guide us to the right remedy for the patient that will trigger the most effective healing response and help them start to feel a lot better.

Homeopathy can work alongside allopathic medicine, but patients usually find that a little while after starting their treatment, they are able to come to reduce the dosage until they are able off it entirely.

Homeopathy for Hypothyroidism/Hashimoto’s

I’ve included a some of the most common remedies that I prescribe as part of a patient’s healing journey with some of their main mental and emotional characteristics. You might find one that resonates with how you are feeling.

Homeopathy for PANDAS/PANS

PANDAS is an acronym standing for Paediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorder Associated with Streptococcal Infections. It is a relatively new, commonly misunderstood, and frequently misdiagnosed disorder affecting children.

Pandas cause

It results from a Group A Streptococcal bacterial infection commonly referred to as “strep” or “strep throat”

The underlying cause of PANDAS is thought to be attributed to an autoimmune attack of healthy brain tissue after a strep infection. The abnormal signalling events caused by the autoantibodies provoke neurological issues such as cognitive and intellectual regression, and severe psychological abnormalities, collectively known as PANDAS.

PANS Cause

PANS is linked to other infections. These include the flu, chickenpox, mycoplasma, and Lyme disease. PANS stands for Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome. They are relatively new, commonly misunderstood, and frequently misdiagnosed disorders.

There is a physiological barrier that prevents toxic material from exiting the blood and entering the brain. This barrier is known as the blood-brain barrier, and it protects fragile brain tissue from circulating pathogens and other potentially toxic substances.

Specific autoantibodies in the blood are able to cross the blood-brain barrier and bind various targets on the outside and inside of neurons in the basal ganglia and cause encephalitis (brain inflammation) commonly described as a ‘flare’ which can appear suddenly of out of the blue resulting in extreme rage, vocal or motor tics, compulsions and obsessions. A flare is usually brought on when they are exposed to a pathogen that they are susceptible to or by anything that may challenge their immune system. This could range from swimming in a chlorinated pool to losing a tooth. Not all children are at risk of reacting to the Streptococcus bacteria in this way, only if you have the susceptibility.

The most common symptoms associated with PANDAS/PANS include frequently exaggerated changes in mood, tics, obsessive-compulsive behaviour OCD, and the sudden onset of intense anxiety. The most common treatment for PANDAS/PANS is Antibiotics and, in some cases, steroids.

The symptoms can be extremely upsetting and exhausting, not just for the child but for the parents and siblings too. Often, the whole family can need treatment as this is such a complex issue to deal with. Also, because it is a relatively new condition, parents are left to deal with the symptoms themselves whilst not knowing what the cause is or why their child has changed/regressed in such a short time.

Case study

I have included a recent case of a four-year-old boy I have been recently treating with PANDAS as an example of how it presents and how homoeopathy can help.

Symptoms

When Luca’s parents first came to see me with their son, he was presenting with the following PANDAS symptoms:

  • Constant tics in up to 7 areas of his body (including shoulder, foot, and eye tics).
  • Severe anxiety.
  • Frozen in fear about doing anything that might involve the slightest risk, such as going on a swing or attempting to climb a tree.
  • Sensitive to noises (even a toilet flushing).
  • Separation anxiety and a lack of independence.
  • Flares/mood swings:
    • A fog would descend, and he would become listless, whiney, and floppy.
    • Or angry and aggressive, particularly towards his Mum.
  • He was upset by a lot of things.
  • He also vocalised that he had intrusive thoughts, often saying to his mum that he was not a good boy.

He was reluctant to go off and play independently with other children and would not join in with social activities at school, particularly singing or dancing or saying his name out loud in circle time. He wouldn’t play football in a group and would only play with his dad, even though he was very good at Football.

Treatment

I prescribed a main constitutional remedy plus a remedy to detox the main cause of PANDAS, the streptococcus bacteria, which tests showed were very high in Luca’s bloodstream. Plus, organ support remedies help his liver and kidneys as toxins are cleared through his body.

Follow-up appointment

On the second consultation, his mum said that they had had a remarkable month. His confidence was up, and his ticks were down. The eye tics were gone, and the ankle tics that were so debilitating were 95% gone.

He had climbed a tree for the first time, was interacting with other children. He had stopped complaining of the intrusive thoughts and was just generally a lot happier.

Following months

In the following months, I would focus on the symptoms that were foremost at that time, such as not wanting to join in group activities where the attention was on him or having a return of intrusive thoughts. After addressing these issues with the appropriate homeopathic remedy, Luca would continue to improve.

I was able to introduce a combination remedy for when he experienced PANDAS flares, which stopped them immediately, instead of his parents having to resort to Ibuprofen (which can have a detrimental effect on the liver, especially as parents often need to dose up to 3-4 times a day for weeks at a time). Shortly after starting the remedies, the flares became less frequent until over time have almost stopped altogether.

Detoxing

Also using homeopathy, I was able to detox from his system candida, mould toxicity, heavy metals and worms which were also present and had shown up in recent functional medicine tests.

Homeopathy is all about clearing the layers of pathology. As one layer gets cleared another set of symptoms come to the fore or there is a return to old symptoms. Not usually to the extent that they first presented. It just means that a little more clearing that in that area needs to be done.

Outcome

At the time of writing this Luca is not completely out of the woods, but he is a very different child to the one I first saw only 6 months ago. Because he is so young and vital and because his Mum follows up with appointments when she sees a new set of symptoms coming through rather than waiting the usual full month for the next consultation, we are able to progress quite quickly. But as a homeopath, it fills me with pure joy to see how far he has come.

Homeopathy for Migraines

Homeopathy for Migraines

I’ve noticed that I’ve successfully treated a number of patients with homeopathy for migraines this month so thought it might be timely to do a blog on what can be an awful and debilitating condition.

Migraines effect 35 million people in the U.S and around 10 million people in the U.K, which is more than the number of diabetes, asthma and epilepsy combined and the most common neurological reasons for attending A&E. Also, migraines are up to three times more prevalent in women than they are in men.

What is a migraine

Migraine is a condition or a syndrome, not just a headache. Headache is a key symptom but not always present during a migraine. The headache pain is caused by nerve-controlled inflammation of the dura, or the membrane between the brain and the skull.

Common treatment for migraines include:

NSAIDs painkillers such as Ibuprfen and triptans are used to treat migraines. But excessive use of NSAIDs can lead to stomach ulcers, heart and kidney pains and in some instances strokes. Triptans can lead to heart attacks, strokes and blood circulation problems and have even been linked to severe major depression in long term users.

Causes of a migraine

The exact cause of migraines is unknown, but there are several possible triggers and factors that may contribute to them:

  • Hormonal changes: Migraines are often linked to hormonal shifts, such as those that occur before menstruation
  • Stress and emotions: Stress, anxiety, and depression can trigger migraines
  • Diet: Certain foods and drinks, such as alcohol, caffeine, chocolate, citrus, aged cheese, red wine, and smoked fish, can trigger migraines
  • Sleep: Sleep deprivation and changes in sleep patterns can trigger migraines
  • Environmental factors: Exposure to bright lights, flickering screens, loud noises, strong smells, and changes in the weather can trigger migraines
  • Physical factors: Poor posture, neck or shoulder tension, jet lag, teeth grinding, and strenuous exercise can trigger migraines
  • Other factors: Dehydration, hunger, schedule changes, and smoking can trigger migraines
  • Genetics: There may be genetic causes of migraines, and you’re more likely to get them if you have a close family member who does.

Types of migraines:

  • Migraine with aura

Also known as a classic migraine, this type has warning signs before the migraine, such as flashing lights.

  • Migraine without aura

The most common type of migraine, which occurs without warning signs.

  • Migraine aura without headache

Also known as a silent migraine, this type has migraine symptoms but no headache.

  • Ocular migraine

Also known as an ophthalmic or retinal migraine, this type causes a brief loss of vision in one eye, along with a dull ache behind the eye.

  • Hemiplegic migraine

This type causes motor weakness or loss of muscle strength, usually on one side of the body.

  • Migraine with brainstem aura

This type can cause dizziness, confusion, loss of balance, trouble speaking, ringing in the ears, and vomiting. It’s linked to hormone changes and mainly affects young adult women.

  • Status migrainosus

This intense type of migraine can last more than 72 hours and can require hospitalization.

  • Ophthalmoplegic migraine

This type causes pain around the eye and may paralyse the muscles around it.

Homeopathy for migraines in my practice

I see many migraines in my practice but unusually it is not always the primary reason why a patient seeks treatment. It may be because they have lived with them for so long ant think that there is no treatment apart from taking painkillers when a migraine starts to present. But painkillers, over time, can have a marked effect on your liver, which in turn can lead to more headaches, so a vicious circle can be created.

Thankfully homeopathy can be really effective in treating migraines, and the patient usually notices an improvement within a few weeks. Even if they have been suffering with them for several years.

Case example:

Kate was in her early 40’s and described herself as quite a headachy person and was experiencing headaches most days. Some of them tipping into migraines. She would often experience stomach issues with the migraines and headaches. She was experiencing a lot at work. Although she was very good at her job, she doubted her capability and would often overextend herself to prove herself to her boss and was not great at saying no. She suffered from anxiety and cared considerably what others thought of her.

She craved chocolate and sweets. She said that she always got a headache with a hangover and the migraines were more prevalent before her period. I prescribed Lycopodium as a constitutional remedy and also Berberis and Chelidonium as a liver and kidney support, as these organs showed signs of overload, especially in the lead up to her period I asked her to come back in four weeks’ time.

Outcome

When she returned, she said that she had not had a headache in three weeks. Which was amazing as she couldn’t remember a time when she had been headache and migraine free for so long. She was also feeling less stressed and more confident at work. Making decisions without asking for others confirmation. She was setting boundaries with her boss and finding herself saying no when she was in danger of overextending herself. On her third visist to me she said that she had experienced a headache prior to her period. I prescribed as the headache felt throbbing and it had a hormonal aspect to it. He has not experienced any headaches since.

Homeopathy for migraines:

Listed below are the most common remedies that I have used to treat this condition. As well as these remedies I like to prescribe liver and kidney support remedies. This is because if a person suffers from migraines, then these organs are usually compromised. So, it’s good to add these to the prescription in a low potency to offer support in this area.

Bryonia

This type of migraine or headache can have a Gastric, rheumatic, congestive or bilious aspect to the headache, which can be worse for any motion. Even of the eyeballs. The head feels as if it is being hit by a hammer and is worse from stooping or even opening the eyes. The scalp is so sensitive it cannot even bear to be brushed. Pain over the left eye traveling to the back of the head.

Natrum mur

Blinding headache or migraine. Feels as if a thousand little hammers are hitting the brain. Or a throbbing brain. Migraines over the eyes with numbness or disturbed vision. Migraines from sunrise to sunset. Headaches before or during a period. Migraines caused by grief. Migraines bought on by sunlight or sunstroke. Also, good to prescribe if there is a hormonal component to the migraine.

Iris

A migraine begins with blurred vision. Dull throbbing or shooting pain in the right side of the forehead. Migraines over the left eye with nausea. Migraine with alternating sides. Sick headaches with a gastric or hepatic component. A person can see visual disturbances such as flashing lights or zigzags.

Kali bich

Migraines in small spots from suppressed catarrh. Periodic headaches with nausea and vertigo. Headaches over eyebrows preceded by blurred vision.

Nux vomica

Migraines on the crown of the head or over the eyes. A Sensation as if a nail is being driven through the top of the head. Toxic headaches from drugs or alcohol or general hangover headaches.

Argentum nit

Not such a common remedy for migraines or headaches, but one that I have used very effectively in my practice when the headache or migraine appears to be caused by stress and anxiety. The head feels like it is in a vice or with a boring pain. The patient can also experience coldness and trembling with the headache. Migraines that end in vomiting.

Sepia

Another remedy to prescribe if excess hormones or a hormone imbalance might be a factor. Migraine or headache on alternating sides. Headaches before or during a period. Headaches with nausea or vomiting. The patient can find the smell of food repulsive during a headache.

Lycopodium

Good also when there is also a gastric element to the headache or migraine. A person needing Lycopodium can be commanding in the home but under confident in the workplace. They crave sweets and sugar. It has a strong affinity with the liver so symptoms can be worse around the menses when the liver becomes overburdened.

Berberis and Chelidonium

A great combination remedy to prescribe to support the organs of elimination, the liver and Kidneys.

Homeopathy for Chronic Urticaria

What is Chronic Urticaria ?

Chronic urticaria when the skin has wheals and/or angioedema for a total duration of six weeks or more. It can be a debilitating condition which really effects a person’s quality of life. There is an increase of autoimmune disorders amongst CU patients. Hashimoto’s being the most common, seen in up to 9.8% of CU sufferers. Infections that have also been associated with CU include H pylori, Streptococci, staphylococci plus some viruses and parasites. Interestingly, in studies, food is very rarely found to be the cause, even though around 25% of sufferers report eating certain foods as the trigger.

CU effects between 0.25% and 1.8% of the world’s population. And in women, twice as often as men. It can occur in both children and adults, although it’s most common in 40- 60 year age gap.

Case Study

Christine came to see me because she had been suffering from Chronic Urticaria and was also showing signs of entering into peri-menopause and had a hypothyroid condition.

Chronic Urticaria symptoms included:

Extreme itchiness around the base of her neck. It would become so itchy that she often scratched it raw.

Very dry skin, especially on her forehead, eyelids, around her mouth and on her hands which she was becoming self-conscious about. The Urticaria had first appeared 7 years ago after eating some shrimp. Her lips and body had swelled up and as a result she was put on steroids. She subsequently had a bad reaction to the steroids so came off of them.

She often felt that her body temperature was either extremely too hot or too cold

She commented that she was also experiencing rage and anxiety which increased even more before her period. She said she felt like she was on an emotional rollercoaster. She also became more particular about tidiness and things being orderly in the lead up to her period.

She was also having night sweats.

There was a strong craving for sweets and chocolate. But after her period, she wanted salty foods. She was also more tired after her period. Usually, women are more fatigued before their period.

Joint pain was prevalent, which had started 6 months ago which she felt mostly in her hips and sometimes in her wrist.

What stood out about this case was that her mental and emotional symptoms got worse after her partner experienced a recent acute health scare. This left Christine extremely worried and led to her constantly over overthinking and checking on things such as had she locked the front door on leaving the house.

Homeopathic prescription

I prescribed Sepia for peri-menopause symptoms.

A Thyroid support combination remedy.

Urticaria Urens for the Urticaria.

Cortisone for the reaction to the steroids.

Berberis and Chelidonium as a liver and kidney support, for any detoxification that might take place once the remedies start to work.

Follow up consultation results

Four weeks later, on her next appointment she said that she felt much lighter. She was experiencing less anxiety and rage. She was also worrying significantly less about her partner suddenly becoming ill again.

The urticaria on her neck was much better. She described her skin dryness as being 60% better. Her hands were no longer cracking on the back.

All symptoms around her period had gone, such as the low energy, rage and ‘O.C.D’ symptoms. Even her sweet cravings had lessoned.

The extreme body temperature had also gone.

By her third appointment the Urticaria had completely gone. Her moods had continued to improve, and her dry skin symptoms had improved so much she described her skin as actually being soft.

The only symptom that had got worse were her night sweats which increased a few days before her period. This is typical in homeopathy. As the main symptoms are healed and cleared, lesser symptoms can come to the fore to be treated.

I then prescribed Phosphorus for the night sweats and continued with the thyroid support remedy. After this prescription the night sweats were completely gone.

Homeopathic remedies for Urticaria:

Urticaria Urines

This remedy is actually made from stinging nettles. It antidotes the effects of eating shellfish. It covers violent itching, prickly heat and nettle rash plus red and raised skin. It works well for hives, chicken pox, burns and bee stings. Symptoms are worse after bathing.

Apis

As well as treating Urticaria, this is more of an acute remedy for bee stings and insect bites. There is more swelling with this remedy. The Urticaria is usually worse at night. The skin is hot, dry with gushes of sweat. The Urticaria can be a result of taking anti-biotics.

Rhus Tox

The urticaria in this case can be seen in tandem with arthritis and from getting wet. The skin can be sensitive to cold air. It can also be dry, hot and burning with swelling and intense itching.

Supplements:

Vitaminc C

Vitamin D

Vitamin B12

Increasing the following might be beneficial as studies have found that CU patients are usually deficient in Vitamin D and B12 and symptoms do well with increased Vitamin C.
